Curriculum enrichment

We believe that a quality education extends beyond mastering reading, writing, maths and the National Curriculum. Our curriculum offer includes a wide range of enrichment opportunities and experiences both within and beyond the school day which some children may not otherwise experience and ensures that all children build the knowledge and cultural capital they need to prepare them for the next stage in their education and beyond.

Article 29 (goals of education): Education must develop every child’s personality, talents and abilities to the full. It must encourage the child’s respect for human rights, as well as respect for their parents, their own and other cultures, and the environment.

Article 31 (leisure, play and culture): Every child has the right to relax, play and take part in a wide range of cultural and artistic activities.

The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child

Extending opportunities to learn beyond the classroom supports our children to develop the skills and experiences they need to become responsible and respectful citizens who become actively involved in public life as adults.

Whole school theme days / weeks

Whole school theme days / weeks

Throughout the year, themed days/weeks are woven into the curriculum to extend the breadth and balance of opportunities we offer our pupils.

Outdoor and local area learning

Outdoor and local area learning

We maximise the use of our local area and our proximity to Sutton Lawn and the town centre through local area visits, geography fieldwork and regular library visits.

Educational visits and residentials

Educational Visits and Residentials

School trips and visits are an integral part of the education of children at Croft Primary.  We value the opportunities such visits offer our pupils and the commitment of staff and adults making them happen.

Visitors into school

Visitors

As well as making visits to other places, we invite visitors into school to provide specialist knowledge and resources, to give pupils an insight into the world outside of school, including the world of work, and to provide hands-on experiences.

PE and sport

PE and sport

We are proud of the high quality of our PE provision and of the sporting opportunities we provide for our pupils from after school clubs, to taking part in competitive sports and tournaments across the district and county.

Music and drama

Music and drama

We have been recognised for the high quality of our music provision and the music opportunities we provide for our pupils, including Rock Steady, school choir, musical instrument tuition and a wide range of opportunities to perform from local events to being part of bigger performances in theatres.

Our next step is to develop the drama opportunities we provide, we have started this work with our very youngest children in Reception with an 'Ashfield Creates' drama workshop.

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)

STEM

We have enriched our science curriculum and enhanced our teaching through STEM learning which has included pupils attending on-line webinars with the RAF and even astronauts! Pupils attend online workshops and work alongside the experts which is both engaging and another means of exposing pupils further to the world of work and the opportunities available them beyond school.

Assemblies

Assemblies

We use Picture News as our class assemblies which focus on current events linking them to British Values and protected characteristics. We have two themed key stage assemblies per week which are based around our Croft Code and pertinent themes over the year, we also link these to British Values and protected characteristics. We have weekly music assemblies led by our specialist music teacher, again which link to the weekly themes where appropriate and we celebrate a musician of the month to expose pupils to a wide range of music genres.
