Geography - We are Geographers
Geography Curriculum Intent
Children will leave Croft as geographers. They will be able to name the countries and capital cities of the UK along with the world’s continents, oceans and seas. They will know many countries around the world, their capital cities and be able to place and name the counties in the UK. The children will have a strong knowledge of place and location.
They will be able to use maps, atlases and globes with confidence and be able to use grid references and keys. They will also have a rich knowledge of both human and physical geography. They will know which each one specifically refers to but they will also know that in today’s world, they are interdependent and that both aspects change over time.
By the time children leave Croft they will think like geographers. They will have a bank of geographical knowledge and be able to communicate geographical information in a variety of ways. As the children move on from our school they will leave with a knowledge and understanding of their role in human geography. They will know the impact and consequences of all processes, both natural and manmade.
Geography Curriculum Implementation
To ensure that our pupils experience a broad and balanced curriculum, we have chosen to teach History in the first half term and Geography in the second half term of each term throughout the year. This provides whole school focus and emphasises progression through school which is subject-specific.
Our Geography curriculum is carefully sequenced across year groups, threads are coherently built and opportunities to study local geography are built in to long term plans. We have decided to use Oak National Academy resources to lower workload and support teachers to further increase their expertise.
Each unit sets out key learning points, misconceptions, key vocabulary, lesson resources and assessments which teachers can select from to best meet the needs of the pupils and our curriculum intent.

Geography Curriculum Impact
Assessment in Geography is based upon lots of conversation, to discover intention and understanding, as well as looking at outcomes of the journey and end result right from Early Years.
We measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:
Observations of pupils learning
Discussions with pupils about their learning
Pupils in Reception are assessed within Understanding the World and their progress is tracked termly.
